After a late night swim in the fancy hotel pool we were pooped from all of the walking and site seeing...
But we knew we needed to wake up early in Arlington as we had one more stop in mind before leaving town. Mom had never been to visit Arlington National Cemetary, and it being Great Grandpa's birthday and all we thought it good to pay tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives for our many freedoms. Also because it was Memorial Day weekend, there were many many visitors too. First we stopped at the gravesite of President Kennedy. It was a gorgeously peaceful place to visit, despite the crowds. The view was amazing, and the engraved speeches of our fallen President were breathtaking. Mom and Dad tried to take it all in, Ella enjoyed some juice.
We then took a long walk over to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We arrived just in time for a magnificant ceremony and changing of the wreath. The bugle player gave us a bittersweet song, the familiar tune that plays at all soldier's funerals and a long salute. Around this time Ella was in need of a nap and a bit crabby, but when she saw the soldiers, felt the silence of the crowd, she just started taking it all in. It was an amazing morning.
Sadly the next 6 hours, with some breaks of course, were spent in the car traveling to West Virgnia. Kentucky here we come!
